Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden

Profile

Since it was founded in 1994, the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden (OTH Amberg-Weiden) has been a dynamic and innovative centre of higher education in Bavaria. With over 4,000 students at its two campuses Amberg and Weiden and more than 60 study programmes, the university of applied sciences OTH offers a wide range of practically-oriented degree courses in four departments: Electrical Engineering, Media and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering / Environmental Technology, Weiden Business School as well as Industrial Engineering and Healthcare.

The OTH Amberg-Weiden stands out especially due to the close ties existing between teaching, research and practice, offering its students excellent academic education with intensive research and direct practical orientation. The students can furthermore profit by a personal and supporting study environment, which enables close cooperation with regional as well as international business, thus preparing them ideally for their future careers.

As regards doctoral degrees, the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden has had its own "Promotionszentrum" (doctoral centre) since April 2024, which enables and coordinates both the awarding of doctoral degrees within its own "Promotionsrecht" (right to award doctorates) and also the carrying out of cooperative doctorates. The OTH Amberg-Weiden's right to confer doctoral degrees, which it has been holding since 2023, covers two future-oriented fields of research: Resource Efficiency and Digitalization, in collaboration with Ansbach University of Applied Sciences, as well as Digital Innovations for a Changing Society, in collaboration with the universities of applied sciences Neu-Ulm and Landshut. Interdisciplinary research is conducted in these fields, linking essential issues such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, health sciences as well as engineering and economics.

Moreover, the OTH Amberg-Weiden is an active member in seven BayWISS Joint Academic Partnerships – Mobility and Transport, Energy, Digitalisation, Economics and Business, Health, Social Change as well as Infrastructure, Building and Urban Development. These memberships provide doctoral candidates the opportunity to advance their research projects within an interdisciplinary and strongly networked academic environment and to profit from the pooled expertise of several Bavarian universities.

The establishment of its doctoral centre as well as the associated right to confer doctoral degrees are considerably strengthening the research landscape at OTH Amberg-Weiden, making the university of applied sciences more attractive for both excellent students and researchers and adding immense value to the scientific and economic development of the entire region. The promotion of doctoral degrees leads to high-qualified experts who not only enrich the region itself but also contribute to the continuing development of the Bavarian higher education landscape.
