GREETING

KEYNOTE SPEECH

"Nachhaltigkeit und Wirtschaftswachstum – unvereinbar oder aufeinander angewiesen?" (Sustainability and economic growth – incompatible or dependent on each other?)

At first glance more sustainability does not seem to necessarily generate more economic growth; nor does more economic growth appear to necessarily lead to more sustainability.  What exactly are the obstacles looked at from the point of view of society as a whole and what can be done to make progress in both areas? What role do universities play in this context, i.e. how can research and education contribute towards the opportunities presented by sustainable economic growth being seen and used?

Prof. Dr. Renate Schubert

ETH Zurich and UniDistance Suisse

Renate Schubert graduated in economics at Mainz University and obtained her doctorate at Tübingen University. She gained experience in development cooperation before qualifying as a university lecturer at Technical University of Darmstadt. She subsequently conducted research and lectured at the Universities of Tübingen and Regensburg before taking up a professorship at ETH Zurich. She worked intensively with researchers from the fields of environment and energy and specialised in behavioural economics, with special focus on environment and energy. Since 2014, she has been involved in research projects of the Singapore-ETH Center (SEC). A current key focus lies on the study of social resilience of societies – identifying framework conditions under which different groups of societies will cooperate and not polarize in times of crisis.

Apart from numerous scientific publications, Renate Schubert has many years of experience in assessments and advice in academia. For instance, she was in the DFG's Senate and Joint Committee for many years, was a consultant for the Excellence Initiative, research council member of the Swiss National Science Foundation or also Head of the External Advisory Board of the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions, but was also in charge (1996/97) of the assessment of the Bavarian faculties of economics. She is currently dean and is supporting the UniDistance Suisse. Renate Schubert was chairwoman of the KIT's Supervisory Board for many years and is currently member of the Universitätsrat of Tübingen University.

Furthermore, Renate Schubert is very experienced in working with and managing scientific committees providing advice to politics. For instance, she was chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) and was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation or also of the Swiss Organe Consultatif sur les Changements Climatiques (OcCC).

IMPULSE TALKS and PANEL DISCUSSION
with the keynote speaker

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Regina Schreiber

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, HAW Kempten

Regina Schreiber is committed to research and innovation actively contributing to sustainable development in economics and society. As Vice President Research and Transfer at Kempten University of Applied Sciences, she sets impulses for interdisciplinary research initiatives, specifically encouraging the cooperation between science, economy and social institutions in order to put sustainable technologies and concepts into practice.

In line with her own research, she serves as Scientific Director at KLEVERTEC, a research institute of Kempten University of Applied Sciences. Their focus lies on the shelf life of food by comprehensively optimising manufacturing, filling and packaging – in particular with regard to ecologically sustainable solutions.

Before starting at Kempten University of Applied Sciences, she gained many years of experience in the field research and development of a global leader in the manufacturing of consumer goods. She gained practical perspectives in national and international positions of responsibility, which enable her to make scientific knowledge accessible specifically for business.

As Vice President it is a matter of importance to her to advance the vision established in HAW Kempten's mission statement for research and transfer: "We take responsibility for shaping progress and sustainable growth in the economy and society."

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Torsten Winterwerber

Course management Value Creation Management, Faculty of Business, HAW Ansbach

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Torsten Winterwerber
Professor for Purchasing, Production Management and Logistics at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences · Course management Value Creation Management · Mayor Dornholzhausen (Rhein-Lahn)

Torsten Winterwerber combines almost three decades of industrial and managerial experience with current academic work. He has been lecturing at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences since 2024, where he is responsible for the cooperative Bachelor's degree programme "Value creation Management" and initiates research projects on digitally integrated production systems as well as resilient supply chains. In 2021, his academic career culminated in obtaining his doctorate at TU Dresden, in which he developed a management model describing the effect of digital technologies on industrial companies. An MBA at Steinbeis School of International Business and Entrepreneurship in 2008 formed the foundations for his practically oriented understanding of strategy, leadership and change.

Before going into science, Torsten Winterwerber held significant positions in the automotive industry as well as in the field of energy-producing technology. As Chief Executive Officer and President Europe at JOYSONQUIN Automotive Systems GmbH, he was in charge of global growth, established ESG programmes and furthered development throughout Europe. Before, as Vice President Operations at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, he managed international engine, assembly and test sites, firmly established lean principles in five countries and substantially reduced processing time as well as quality costs. His operative expertise has its roots is his time as works manager at Toyota Boshoku Europe, where he transferred the Toyota production system to German manufacturing, thus achieving efficiency and quality standards at group level.

Torsten Winterwerber has furthermore been serving as mayor in an honorary capacity in his village Dornholzhausen since 2024, promoting digitalisation and sustainability initiatives, which accentuates his abilities in communal stakeholder management and extends his perspective by public administrative practice.

Professionally, Torsten Winterwerber concentrates on operational excellence, lean and transformation programmes, employment of Industry 4.0 technologies including digital twins, the development of resilient procurement and supply network strategies as well as the management of intercultural teams in Europe, Asia and North America. He has knowledge of bringing together strategic group management, operative excellence and academic reflection, thus setting practically oriented impulses spanning science, economy and public authorities.

With this range of experience, Prof. Dr. Winterwerber offers valuable perspectives for the BayWISS Annual Colloquium: he combines profound industrial and practical know-how with a clear scientific view of the challenges and opportunities of digital value creation and simultaneously demonstrates how regional responsibility and global transformation can be effectively linked to each other.
